Mariinsky Ballet & Orchestra

Wales Millennium Centre: 14th–17th April 2016

In April, the Mariinsky Ballet made an exciting return to Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, presenting two contrasting programmes that showcased a range of works by major contemporary choreographers. Several of these works had never been performed by the Mariinsky Ballet in the UK. Leading Mariinsky dancers appearing in the Cardiff residency included Ekaterina Kondaurova, Viktoria Tereshkina, Daria Pavlenko, Vladimir Shklyarov and Yury Smekalov. The Mariinsky Theatre Trust is particularly grateful to BP for its support of this Mariinsky UK Tour.

Highlights of the residency included Sacre (The Rite of Spring) and Concerto DSCH, both conducted by Valery Gergiev with the Mariinsky Orchestra. Sacre was created for the Mariinsky Ballet in 2013 by Sasha Waltz to mark the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s legendary work. Concerto DSCH is Alexey Ratmansky’s joyful and exuberant interpretation of Shostakovich’s beautiful Second Piano Concerto. The first programme is a triple bill of ballets by Robbins, van Manen and McGregor to music by Chopin, Piazzolla and Richter.

On 17th April at noon there was a family concert by the Mariinsky Orchestra in which Valery Gergiev both conducted and narrated Peter and the Wolf. Prokofiev wrote this to help children identify orchestral instruments – however, it is a perennial favourite with all ages.
