The Mariinsky Theatre Trust is grateful to BP for its ten-year support of the Mariinsky UK touring programme. This partnership builds on the strong relationship already established between BP Russia and the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg and forms part of BP's cultural programme in the UK.

Shostakovich Symphony No.11 The Year 1905

Under its Artistic Director, Valery Gergiev, the Mariinsky Orchestra performs an all-Russian programme culminating in Shostakovich’s epic Symphony No.11, whose almost film-like score describes the momentous events of 1905 in St Petersburg.

The first half of the programme is dedicated to Russia’s national poet, Alexander Pushkin, and includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s famous ‘Flight of the Bumble Bee’ from the opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan.

The Mariinsky Orchestra was named as one of the top orchestras in the world by Gramophone.

Whether in a slow lyrical passage, a fanfare rising out of nothing, the sweetness of flutes emerging from a big brass chord or those same flutes playing a maniacal swirl of notes, the orchestra continues to show its brilliance and flexibility at every turn. Bachtrack
